The urgency of global food security has brought the importance of lowland agricultural management and practices to the forefront. The lowlands in South Sumatra are vast, covering 3 million hectares, making it the largest area with potential for rice production. In South Sumatra, lowland is the largest type of paddy field, accounting for more than 70% of the total paddy land. South Sumatra is the fifth-largest rice-producing province in Indonesia. One of the most promising areas of innovation lies within lowland agriculture, where diverse and adaptive strategies can be implemented to address the challenges of climate change, resource scarcity, and population growth. Lowland Innovative Agriculture for Food Security delves into the various approaches and technologies transforming lowland areas into hubs of agricultural productivity. This summer course highlights these regions’ potential to contribute significantly to the food supply while promoting environmental sustainability. Through this summer course, the Faculty of Agriculture Universitas Sriwijaya seeks to provide insights into how innovation in lowland agriculture can help secure a future with resilient, efficient, and equitable food systems. This summer course is a call to action for students, researchers, and practitioners to engage with the emerging opportunities in lowland agriculture to create a more food-secure world, especially in lowland areas.
